Quote of the Week

On September 22, 1776, American patriot Nathan Hale was executed by British forces after volunteering to serve as a spy for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” – Nathan Hale

Hale’s final words reflected the courage and devotion of a young American willing to sacrifice everything for the cause of independence. At just 21 years old, he understood the immense stakes of the struggle for liberty and willingly placed the interests of his country above his own life.

Nearly 250 years later, Hale’s sacrifice remains a powerful reminder of the courage required to defend freedom. The independence we celebrate today was secured by generations of Americans who answered the call to serve, often at tremendous personal cost.

From the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to those who serve our nation today, America’s history is defined by men and women willing to sacrifice for something greater than themselves.

Nathan Hale gave his life for the country he believed in. His final words remind us that the freedoms we enjoy were purchased through the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us. It is our responsibility to honor their legacy, defend the principles for which they fought, and ensure that the American promise of life, liberty, and opportunity endures for generations to come.

We remember Nathan Hale, and all those who have given everything for the United States of America.

Over the last two weeks, in Washington and the district, I have had the pleasure of meeting with so many constituents, small business owners, farmers, and community leaders to hear directly about the issues that matter most to you. We continue to face serious challenges, including the high cost of groceries, gasoline, and healthcare, and I remain committed to actively pursuing common-sense solutions. It is an honor to represent you in Congress, and I will keep working every day to ensure our region and our nation continue to thrive.

Service Day Announcement

I’m pleased to announce that I will be hosting my 2026 Service Academy Day on Saturday, October 3, in New Bern!

This event is an opportunity for students across Eastern North Carolina who are interested in attending a U.S. service academy to learn more about the admissions process, congressional nominations, and the opportunities available to those who choose to serve our nation.

Students and their families will have the chance to hear directly from representatives and learn more about what it takes to pursue an appointment to one of our nation’s service academies.

If you are a student considering a future at the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, or U.S. Coast Guard Academy, I encourage you to join us.

Helping a Business Owner

A Craven County business owner reached out to my office after experiencing a delay in receiving a tax refund from the IRS. My office worked directly with the Taxpayer Advocate Service to resolve the issue, resulting in the taxpayer receiving a $39,773 refund. Team Murphy stands ready to help cut through bureaucracy and assist constituents in navigating the federal government when they need it most

Meeting with National Council for Prescription Drug Programs

I appreciated the opportunity to meet with leaders from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs to discuss the Every Dollar Counts Act and the importance of improving our prescription drug system.

As a physician, I know how important it is for patients to have reliable access to the medications they need. Patients should not face unnecessary barriers when filling a prescription or managing their health.

The prescription drug system is complex, and it takes collaboration across the healthcare community to make sure it works effectively for patients, pharmacists, and physicians. NCPDP brings together many of the experts who understand these challenges firsthand.

The Every Dollar Counts Act is an important step toward addressing these challenges and improving prescription drug access and affordability. I appreciate NCPDP’s engagement on this legislation and their commitment to working with Congress on policies that put patients first.

I look forward to continuing to work with NCPDP and stakeholders across the healthcare community to advance the Every Dollar Counts Act and deliver better outcomes for patients.

Meeting with Carolinas Credit Union League

I met with leaders from the Carolinas Credit Union League to discuss priorities important to credit unions, consumers, and communities across North Carolina.

Credit unions play an important role in helping families, small businesses, and individuals access affordable financial services and lending opportunities. We also discussed several pieces of legislation that would improve access to lending, modernize outdated financial reporting requirements, strengthen protections against fraud targeting seniors, and expand homeownership opportunities.

These issues directly affect families and consumers. We should be looking for ways to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens, protect Americans from financial scams, and make it easier for individuals and families to access the financial services they need to build a stronger future.

I appreciate the Carolinas Credit Union League for sharing their perspective and advocating on behalf of credit unions and their members. I look forward to continuing to work together on policies that strengthen our financial system, protect consumers, and expand economic opportunity.

Meeting with Butterball

I met with Butterball to discuss the issues affecting turkey producers statewide.

North Carolina is home to a strong poultry and agriculture industry that supports farmers, workers, businesses, and communities across Eastern North Carolina and beyond. Butterball has a significant presence in our state, with farming, live operations, and processing facilities supporting jobs and agricultural communities.

We discussed several priorities for the turkey industry, including animal health, agricultural labor, and trade. Maintaining poultry health is essential to protecting farmers, producers, and the food supply, while ensuring agricultural producers have access to a reliable workforce is critical to keeping farms and processing facilities operating.

Trade is also important to North Carolina agriculture. Our producers depend on access to markets at home and around the world, and we should continue working to ensure American agricultural products can compete in global markets.

I appreciate Butterball for sharing their perspective and bringing our agricultural communities' concerns directly to Congress. I look forward to continuing to work with farmers, producers, and agricultural leaders to strengthen North Carolina agriculture and support the communities that depend on it.

Meeting with Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce

I enjoyed meeting with the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce to discuss issues important to Puerto Rico and our nation.

We discussed the need to address Medicare Advantage rates, the status of efforts to reconstruct and strengthen Puerto Rico’s energy grid, and making the increased military presence on the island a permanent priority.

Puerto Rico plays an important role in our healthcare system, energy security, and national defense. I’m grateful for the Chamber’s advocacy and partnership, and I look forward to continuing to work together on these priorities.

Visit to Greenville Fire and Rescue

It was a pleasure to visit the Greenville Fire/Rescue Department headquarters for a tour and to meet with our local firefighters.

Eastern North Carolina fire departments play a critical role in keeping our communities safe, often working under difficult conditions and with limited resources. In Congress, I’m proud to work with our local departments to secure federal funding so they have the tools they need and can invest in state-of-the-art equipment to stay prepared.

We owe so much to the Greenville Fire/Rescue Department for looking after our town and answering the call to duty at a moment’s notice, any time of the day. Thank you to Chief Jeremy Anderson and the team for your selfless service to our community and for putting yourselves in harm's way to keep us safe.

Meeting with Koinonia Christian Center Pastors

It was a pleasure meeting with the pastors of Koinonia Christian Center and hearing about the important work they are doing to serve families and strengthen our community.

Faith-based organizations play an important role in communities across Eastern North Carolina, providing support, encouragement, and opportunities for people to come together and serve their neighbors.

I appreciated the opportunity to hear more about Koinonia Christian Center, learn about their ministry, and discuss the needs and priorities of the people they serve.

I am grateful for their leadership and commitment to our community, and I look forward to continuing to work with them and other community leaders across Eastern North Carolina.

Celebrated Rural Communities Opioid Response Program Grant for Eastern North Carolina

It was a pleasure to join Administrator Tom Engels, Agape Health Services, and community leaders in Washington, NC, to celebrate a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to help expand access to behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment across rural Eastern North Carolina.

Throughout my time in public service, addressing the opioid crisis has been one of my top priorities. As a member of the North Carolina House, I introduced the STOP Act to combat prescription opioid abuse and helped enact the Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Enforcement Act to strengthen penalties for the illegal manufacture, distribution, and possession of these dangerous drugs.

That work has continued in Congress, where I have sponsored the bipartisan Veteran Heroin Overdose Prevention Act to address opioid abuse and overdose deaths among those who served our nation.

For rural communities, access to treatment and recovery services can make all the difference. Starting the process of seeking help is difficult enough, and we must make sure patients have the resources and support they need to get on a better path and avoid relapse.

Agape is doing important work to save lives, restore health, and give people struggling with addiction a path toward recovery. I am proud to stand with them and grateful for the work they do every day for families across Eastern North Carolina.

Attended ECU Health Aortic Awareness Day Event

It was a pleasure to join ECU for Aortic Awareness Day alongside the John Ritter Foundation, Yasmine and Tyler Ritter, patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

An aortic emergency is a life-changing event that affects far more than the patient. Families and loved ones experience the fear, uncertainty, and challenges of recovery alongside them, and their stories deserve to be heard.

As a physician, I know that treating the medical emergency is only part of the recovery process. We must also recognize the mental and emotional health challenges that patients and their families can face after a traumatic event.

Aortic Awareness Day is an important opportunity to bring those experiences into the conversation, raise awareness, and support the patients and families navigating life after an aortic emergency.

I am grateful to ECU and the John Ritter Foundation for bringing people together to share their stories, support one another, and help improve awareness and care for those affected by aortic disease.

Urology Month

September is Urology Month, a time to raise awareness of the importance of urologic health and encourage Americans to take an active role in protecting their health.

As a urologist, I have seen firsthand how early detection, regular screenings, and access to quality care can make a meaningful difference in a patient’s life. Conditions affecting the urinary tract and reproductive system can impact millions of Americans, yet many people delay seeking care or discussing symptoms with their doctor. We must continue working to break down those barriers and make sure patients have the information and care they need.

Across Eastern North Carolina and throughout our nation, we should use Urology Month as a reminder that taking care of your health starts with paying attention to changes in your body and talking with your doctor. Whether it is prostate health, kidney stones, bladder conditions, or other urologic concerns, early conversations and appropriate care can lead to better outcomes.

As a urologist and a Member of Congress, I will continue working to improve access to quality health care, advance medical research, and ensure patients have the tools they need to make informed decisions about their health. Urology Month reminds us that prevention and early detection matter, and that taking care of your health should always be a priority.
