Thank you for taking the time to read my most recent updates from Eastern North Carolina and Washington, D.C. As always, it remains a true honor and a privilege to represent you in Congress! If this email was forwarded to you, you can subscribe to my e-newsletter here.

Quote of the Week

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, taking the decisive step that would lead to the birth of the United States of America and forever change the course of history.

"The Second Day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America." – John Adams

Writing to his wife, Abigail, John Adams recognized the historic significance of the moment and believed July 2 would forever be remembered as the day America chose liberty. His words captured the courage, conviction, and determination of those who risked everything in pursuit of self-government and freedom.

Of course, the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, officially the beginning of America’s rich history. This day serves as a reminder of the enduring principles upon which our nation was founded: liberty, representative government, and the belief that all people are created equal. The vote for independence set in motion a new chapter in history, one that continues to shape our nation and inspire people around the world.

As we reflect on this pivotal moment, we honor the vision and sacrifice of our Founding Fathers and all those who have worked to preserve the freedoms secured by their bold decision more than two centuries ago.

Over the last two weeks, in Washington and the district, I have had the pleasure to meet with so many constituents, small business owners, farmers, and community leaders to hear directly about the issues that matter most. We continue to face serious challenges, including the high cost of groceries, gasoline, and healthcare, and I remain committed to actively pursuing common-sense solutions. It is an honor to represent you in Congress, and I will keep working every day to ensure our region and our nation continue to thrive.

I will continue fighting for the values of North Carolina's Third Congressional District. If you wish to stay more engaged and aware of what is happening in Washington and our District, please follow me on my social media accounts linked above or here: Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube.

Obtaining A Passport

A Pitt County constituent reached out to my office after becoming concerned that her passport was still showing as "processing" just days before her scheduled trip to Thailand, despite paying for expedited service and overnight shipping. My office worked directly with the Philadelphia Passport Agency, and within three days, we secured an update and a tracking number for her passport so she could prepare for her upcoming travel. Team Murphy stands ready to help cut through bureaucracy and assist constituents in navigating the federal government when they need it most

Floor Speech on Greedy Health Insurance Company Stock Buybacks

Since 2015, the top 7 companies have spent more than $137 billion buying back stock. These insurers put profits above patients, denying care to those in need to boost their bottom line.

Ways and Means Committee Passes My Nonprofit Hospital Transparency Bill

The Ways and Means Committee passed my Tax Exempt Hospital Transparency Act during a full committee markup.

Nonprofit hospitals receive significant tax benefits in exchange for providing meaningful community benefits and charitable care. Patients and taxpayers deserve transparency regarding how these institutions are meeting those obligations and serving the communities that rely on them.

My legislation promotes greater accountability by improving transparency requirements and helping ensure nonprofit hospitals remain focused on their charitable mission. Increased transparency empowers patients, informs policymakers, and strengthens trust in our healthcare system.

Greater transparency leads to better accountability, and I will continue working to advance policies that strengthen our healthcare system and put patients first.

Veterans' Affairs Health Subcommittee Hearing on Improving Care Delivery

Ensuring our veterans have access to high-quality healthcare remains one of our nation's most important responsibilities.

During a Veterans' Affairs Health Subcommittee hearing, we considered a number of proposals aimed at improving care and services for veterans, including expanding access for veterans in medical deserts, strengthening oversight and accountability within the Veterans Health

Administration, supporting caregivers, improving care coordination, and enhancing treatment options for veterans facing complex medical challenges.

Our veterans have sacrificed for our country, and they deserve a healthcare system that is responsive, transparent, and focused on their needs. I remain committed to advancing policies that improve access to care, strengthen VA services, and honor the promises we have made to those who served.

Ways and Means Full Committee Hearing on NIL in College Athletics

The sports industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, from the growth of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities in college athletics to the increasing role of tax policy in professional sports.

During a Ways and Means Committee hearing, we examined how federal tax policy affects student-athletes, colleges and universities, professional sports leagues, and local communities. We also discussed the use of taxpayer-backed subsidies for stadium projects, the importance of financial literacy for athletes, and the need for greater transparency and accountability across the industry.

As sports continue to evolve, Congress has a responsibility to ensure federal policies provide clarity, protect taxpayers, and support fair opportunities for athletes and communities alike

Meeting with CropLife America

It was great meeting with CropLife America and agricultural leaders from Eastern North Carolina to discuss issues impacting producers back home and across the country.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Eastern North Carolina's economy, and hearing directly from those on the ground is critical to understanding the challenges and opportunities facing our farming communities. I appreciated the opportunity to meet with growers, including constituents from the Third District, and discuss ways to support a strong and productive agricultural sector.

I will continue working to ensure our farmers have the tools and resources they need to succeed and keep feeding communities here at home and around the world.

Meeting with Eastern Carolina Vocational Center

It was a pleasure meeting with Darone Dancy of ECVC to discuss efforts to expand employment opportunities for veterans and support those who have served our nation.

Our veterans bring invaluable skills, leadership, and experience to the workforce, and organizations like ECVC play an important role in connecting them with meaningful career opportunities.

As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I remain committed to supporting policies that help veterans successfully transition to civilian life and thrive in their careers after service.

Meeting with American Sportfishing Association

I was grateful for the opportunity to meet with the American Sportfishing Association and hear directly about issues affecting North Carolina’s recreational fishing community and coastal economy.

We discussed South Atlantic red snapper access for anglers, the importance of recreational fishing to coastal communities, and ongoing efforts to ensure the 2026 season moves forward in a way that supports both conservation goals and access for sportsmen.

These issues are important to many across Eastern North Carolina, and I appreciate the opportunity to engage on ways we can support both our natural resources and the communities that depend on them.

Meeting with UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti

I met with Carlos Gabriel Ruiz Massieu Aguirre, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti and Head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti, to discuss the ongoing security crisis and efforts to restore stability in Haiti.

Our conversation focused on international efforts to address gang violence, strengthen justice and detention systems, and support initiatives aimed at disarmament and reintegration. These efforts are critical to helping the Haitian people rebuild safe and secure communities while promoting long-term stability throughout the Caribbean and our hemisphere.

I appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from leaders working on these challenges and remain committed to supporting policies that advance security, accountability, and stability in our hemisphere.

Hosting 5th Veterans History Project

The 5th Veterans History Project at Coastal Carolina Community College was a wonderful event dedicated to honoring the veterans who have served our nation with courage and distinction.

I want to thank every veteran who took the time to share their stories and experiences. These firsthand accounts of service and sacrifice are an important part of our nation’s history, and I am proud that they will be preserved in the Library of Congress for future generations.

It was a privilege to hear from these remarkable individuals and to help ensure their contributions to our country are never forgotten. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event such a success.

Tour of Carolina Museum of the Marine in Jacksonville

I had the privilege of touring the newly opened Carolina Museum of the Marine in Jacksonville and seeing firsthand how this incredible institution honors the legacy of the United States Marine Corps.

The museum serves as a powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and commitment of the Marines who have defended our nation throughout history. Through its exhibits and educational programs, it ensures that future generations will understand and appreciate the service of those who answered the call.

Thank you to Major General Joe Shrader for the tour and for sharing the vision behind this important addition to Eastern North Carolina. I encourage everyone to visit and experience this outstanding museum for themselves.
